Introduction to Beeswax Batik

Traditionally, Hmong women practice batik, where beeswax is used to design their clothing. Hmong women normally design their clothing with aesthetically pleasing geometric patterns. After drawing the design out with beeswax, the fabric will be soaked in dye. The beeswax is dye resistant, thus leaving patterns on the fabric. Creating beeswax batik is a tedious process requiring weeks of labour. Therefore, it symbolizes the hardworking nature of women and serves as an indication of a virtuous wife.

Workshop Details

Join Giang Thi Nang, our instructor with decades of batik experience, at this workshop! She will guide you to replicate simple and elegant patterns on hemp clothing with just an iron tool and melted beeswax. Simply dip the iron tool into the melted beeswax and gingerly trace out the shapes. It requires some concentration to draw the patterns in a neat fashion, but it certainly pays off in the end as you look upon your finished product with pride.
