Introduction to Hmong Embroidery

Embroidery, a traditional art form of the Hmong people, is ubiquitous in the homes and traditional garbs of Hua Tat’s 150 families. They are easily distinguished from other forms of textiles by their bold, geometric designs rendered in bright and contrasting colours.

The patterns used in these textiles are passed down from generation to generation by memory. They are also strongly rooted in nature, often depicting bees, butterflies and flowers. Hmong embroidery is mainly used in their ethnic clothing, which the villagers wear on a daily basis. A full traditional Hmong ethnic costume takes over 6 months to complete.
